How to do the Access requests steps on My Day: open the Requests list, log a request, ask a custodian to search, redact, send a letter and practise.

Get Started: Access Requests
The Access requests topic on My Day is for people who log or change requests, usually coordinators. Each step below matches one step in the topic.
Open the Requests list
Select the Requests tab in the top navigation. The list shows every request you can see, with summary cards (Active, Overdue, Due this week, In review, On hold), a search box and Filter. Click a row to open the request. The step ticks when you open the list.
Log your first request
- On the Requests tab, click New to open the New access request panel.
- Choose the Request type, set the Received date and pick the Assigned to officer (your own name is pre-selected).
- Enter a Title and Description.
- Under Requestor information, start typing to find an existing contact or choose Create new.
- Click Create request to start the clock now, or Save as draft to finish intake later.
Ask a custodian to search for records
Open the request, go to the Assignments tab and use Add assignment. Pick one or more custodians, name the assignment, set a priority and due date, and write instructions. Custodians never see the requestor's name or e-mail, so write instructions that stand on their own. They receive the assignment on their own Assignments tab.
Redact a record with an exemption
- Open the request's Documents tab and open a record in the redaction workspace.
- Draw a rectangle or select text to create a redaction.
- Choose one or more exemptions. You can type a section number or words to find one.
- Check the result on the Redacted preview tab, which shows the recipient's view.
Send a letter to a requestor
- On the request's Requestor tab, click Send correspondence.
- Confirm the recipient and choose Send from if it is offered.
- Pick a template, edit the subject and message, and add attachments if you need them.
- Select Send. If the purpose needs sign-off, the button reads Submit for approval and the senior official approves the letter first.
Practise on a training request
Select Practise on this step to start a fictional request in train mode. You can follow the same steps without sending anything to a real requestor.
Guide me, Practise and Mark complete
Each step in the Get started group on My Day has one main action and two icons.
- Guide me (the training icon) highlights the real control on the real screen in at most four short steps. The control stays usable, Tab reaches it, and Escape closes the tour. Guide me never opens a case for you. See Guide me.
- Practise appears on steps that have a training case. It opens train mode, where you work on fictional cases and nothing is sent, delivered or published. See Train mode.
- ? opens this page. Mark complete ticks the step when you have already done it another way.
A step ticks itself when you do it for real. Practising in train mode ticks only the Practise steps. For the whole group, see Get Started.
